Virgil van Dijk and Arne Slot faced tough questions from Clarence Seedorf regarding their roles in addressing the Mo Salah saga.
Salah was left at home by Liverpool for their Champions League victory over Inter Milan on Tuesday night following an interview in which he accused his club of scapegoating him over their poor form, claiming to have no relationship with Slot anymore.
Salah had previously been benched for three consecutive Premier League matches. He is set to head to the Africa Cup of Nations on December 15 to represent Egypt, further complicating his situation with Liverpool.
Pitchside at San Siro for Amazon Prime Sport, Dutch legend Seedorf posed challenging questions to his compatriots.
Seedorf said to Van Dijk: “You cannot say it, but I can: I think he should apologise. Not for what he said, but for the decision to go out. It creates a difficult environment internally and adds unnecessary distractions at this moment. I say this as a fan of Mo Salah; he’s a great professional and an outstanding player.
“But, as captain, will you play a role in trying to restore peace? This is such a delicate part of the season.” Van Dijk responded: “It is indeed. The reality is that Mo is going to Africa this weekend.
“I’ve known Mo for a long time; we are good friends. We have experienced both highs and lows together. He has been a significant part of the success I’ve had at the club, and I’ve been a big part of his success. We are all part of Liverpool Football Club.
“We communicate. These matters should stay private, as they should.
“As players, we need to insulate ourselves from external noise. I encourage my teammates to do so.”
Seedorf then directed his attention to Slot, who led Liverpool to a crucial victory in Italy despite Salah’s absence.
Slot initially stated: “It should all be about what we accomplished in a stadium like this against Inter.
“I understand all questions will focus on Mo, but these players deserve recognition for their contributions.”
