Federal Ministry of Livestock Development has partnered with the World Bank Group and the African Development Bank (AfDB) to tackle climate change in Nigeria’s livestock sector.

It aims to boost sustainable growth, protect livelihoods and strengthen food security.

The partnership, announced in Abuja yesterday, will focus on climate-smart livestock practices, measuring methane and nitrous oxide emissions, and building national data systems to inform policy.

The permanent secretary Dr Chinyere Ijeoma Akujobi emphasised the urgent need to address climate variability’s impact on animal health, feed, water availability and productivity.

Team Lead of the Ministry’s Technical Working Group on Climate Change, Dr Alike Peter said the collaboration supports the National Livestock Growth Acceleration Strategy, which aims to double the sector’s GDP contribution from $32 billion to $74 billion within ten years.

The World Bank’s Dr. Harrison Charo Karisa highlighted opportunities in climate-smart aquaculture, blue economy initiatives like seaweed farming, and carbon markets linked to methane reduction.

AFDB’s Dr. Youssouf Kabore pledged full support for practical, scalable interventions.

The meeting also included representatives from GIZ, Netzence Sustainability Limited, and 3logy Limited.
