Local Awards Open Doors For Young Innovators In Anambra

For many young innovators in Nigeria, recognition at home is proving to be more than symbolic—it is opening doors to real opportunities.

John Onuigbo, co-founder of Foris Labs and creator of Nigeria’s first gamified virtual laboratory, said local awards played a key role in expanding his reach and influence.

Onuigbo, who won Anambra Innovator of the Year in 2023 and Most Impactful Young Person of the Year in 2024 at the Anambra Man of the Year Awards, said the honours brought increased visibility to his work.

According to him, the recognition attracted media attention, strengthened his professional network, and created new opportunities in the education technology space.

“Recognition at home puts you on the map. It helps people see what you are building and why it matters,” he said.

He explained that while global recognition is valuable, local validation often comes with immediate benefits, especially for innovators trying to solve local problems.

Onuigbo noted that the awards helped more people understand and engage with his virtual laboratory innovation, driving wider interest in his work.

He also recalled the emotional moment his image was displayed on a billboard in Ogidi, Anambra State, describing it as a proud moment for his family and community.
