Luke Hemsworth has shared candid insight into what it’s like building a career in the entertainment industry while belonging to one of Hollywood’s most recognisable families.
The 45-year-old actor, brother to Chris and Liam Hemsworth, told The Guardian, while discussing his new mixed martial arts film ‘Beast’, that many people wrongly assume his surname makes opportunities effortless.
“I think there’s an assumption that life is easy if you have the Hemsworth name, that you’re gonna get roles super easily,” he said, adding that in his experience, it has actually been a lot more difficult, and comes with a stigma.
With Chris Hemsworth famously portraying Marvel’s ‘Thor’ and Liam Hemsworth known for ‘The Hunger Games’, Luke noted that expectations often follow him.
“There is kind of baggage that’s left over… Most of it is, ‘Oh, you’re really short!’ ” he said.
To carve out his own identity in film and television, Luke says he has had to be intentional about distinguishing himself from his brothers.
He explained that he must be very specific about who he is, though confusion still happens. “….Every now and again, someone calls me Liam,” he pointed out, recalling a recent ‘Beast’ premiere, where filmmaker Rob Carlton mistakenly introduced him by the wrong name.
“So I have to be very aware of my craft, making sure I’ve really prepared. That sounds like a no-brainer, but I’ve had to really work, really dive deep into that part of my game,” he continued. “But I love it. I’ve had all these beautiful character roles.”
All three Hemsworth brothers, raised in Australia by parents Craig and Leonie, have gone on to build successful acting careers in Hollywood.
