The Maryam Abacha American University of Niger (MAAUN Niger) has recorded a major milestone in higher education after emerging as the highest-ranked university in the Republic of Niger in the 2026 Times Higher Education (THE) Impact Rankings.
The latest rankings place MAAUN Niger first in Niger Republic, 14th among Africa’s private universities, and within the 801–1000 global band, highlighting the institution’s growing reputation for academic excellence, research, innovation and sustainable development.
The achievement marks a significant breakthrough for both the university and Niger Republic, reinforcing MAAUN Niger’s status as one of West Africa’s leading bilingual institutions and a fast-rising centre of academic excellence on the continent.
The Times Higher Education Impact Rankings evaluate universities based on their contributions to the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), assessing institutions not only on academic performance but also on their impact through research, teaching, outreach and stewardship.
Commenting on the achievement, the Dean of Postgraduate Studies, Prof. Ibrahim Lawal, described the ranking as a reflection of the university’s commitment to excellence and societal impact.
He said the recognition goes beyond conventional academic rankings by measuring how universities contribute to solving real-world challenges.
“The recognition of Maryam Abacha American University of Niger reflects our growing influence as an institution committed to producing globally competitive graduates while generating practical solutions to local and global development challenges,” he said.
Lawal noted that the university’s inclusion in the 2026 rankings was the result of sustained investment in human capital, modern learning facilities, healthcare education and research.
He expressed confidence that the recognition would strengthen MAAUN Niger’s international profile, attract greater academic collaborations and reinforce its position as an emerging hub for higher education and innovation in Africa.
The latest ranking further underscores the increasing contribution of African private universities to global scholarship and sustainable development, while positioning MAAUN Niger among the continent’s leading institutions committed to advancing quality education and societal impact.
