Thomas Tuchel is set to deliver several major surprises when he announces his 26-man England squad for this summer’s World Cup on Friday, with both Phil Foden and Harry Maguire expected to miss the cut.
According to sources close to the selection process, Manchester City playmaker Phil Foden will not be included in the German coach’s final roster. Despite his undeniable talent, the 24-year-old has endured an inconsistent season at club level, which appears to have cost him his place.
An even more startling omission is that of Manchester United defender Harry Maguire. The 33-year-old, who was part of Tuchel’s previous squad for March’s friendlies against Japan and Uruguay, has confirmed his disappointment in a social media post.
“I was confident I could have played a major part this summer for my country after the season I’ve had,” Maguire wrote on Instagram. “I’ve been left shocked and gutted by the decision. I wish the players all the best.”
Maguire’s club teammate Luke Shaw is also set to be omitted, despite enjoying an impressive campaign. Shaw was named in Tuchel’s 55-man provisional squad, and many pundits had called for his inclusion.
However, with Newcastle United’s Dan Burn and Manchester City’s Nico O’Reilly reportedly in line for call-ups, Shaw is expected to miss out.
Defensive reshuffling continues with AC Milan’s Fikayo Tomori also likely to be left behind. In contrast, Arsenal winger Noni Madueke is expected to make the final squad, joining his Gunners teammates Bukayo Saka and Declan Rice.
The absences of Maguire and Tomori could open the door for John Stones, despite the Manchester City defender’s injury-hit season. Tuchel views Stones as a key figure but has repeatedly expressed concern over the departing City man’s fitness levels.
Chelsea’s Levi Colwill, recently returned from a long-term knee injury, is another hopeful after being included in the preliminary squad. Meanwhile, Brentford midfielder Jordan Henderson a mainstay under Tuchel is widely expected to keep his place.
The World Cup, co-hosted by the United States, Mexico, and Canada, kicks off on 11 June.
