The Department of State Services (DSS) and the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) have failed to confirm or respond to reports of the alleged rearrest of former attorney-general of the federation and minister of justice, Abubakar Malami, after he met his bail conditions and was released from Kuje Correctional Facility.
Malami was repeatedly arrested by the operatives of the Department of State Services (DSS) after days of tension over his stalled bail and a security siege at the Kuje Correctional Facility.
The DSS had maintained a blockade around the prison since Malami was granted bail, preventing his release despite his compliance with bail conditions.
Malami remained confined in Kuje Prison, and the situation escalated last Friday when Malami’s son was arrested while allegedly attempting to leave the prison premises amid the clampdown, a move seen as tightening state control rather than easing it.
Earlier on Monday, Malami was said to have been rearrested at Kuje correctional centre after he was released on bail.
Security sources said the former attorney-general is facing a fresh probe by the DSS.
It was alleged that arms were discovered at his Kebbi country home by operatives of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) during a search.
The former AGF had recently alleged that the DSS was plotting to rearrest him from Kuje Prison.
However, when LEADERSHIP tried to confirm the reason for Malami’s alleged rearrest with the DSS, the security police failed to respond to our message.
The EFCC also did not immediately confirm or deny his rearrest.
It will be recalled that the Federal High Court on Wednesday granted Malami, his wife, and his son bail in the sum of ₦500 million each, with two sureties.
However, in a statement issued by his special assistant on Media, Mohammed Bello Doka, the former minister alleged that the DSS was conducting surveillance at the correctional centre in an attempt to re-arrest him.
The former minister is said to have met his bail conditions but was picked up by the secret police.
