To combat malnutrition and support nursing and expectant mothers, the Rotary Club of Abuja Ministers Hill has donated delivery and breastfeeding kits to mothers in need in Jahi 2.
The president of the Rotary Club of Abuja Ministers Hill, Rotarian Oro-gene Adia, during the Rotary community health outreach project in Jahi 2, Abuja, said the initiative aims to provide essential care and nutrition to newborns and their mothers, particularly in underserved communities.
The project is supported by The Rotary Foundation District Grant DG2464799 (2023-2024)
He said the donation is necessary to improve maternal and child health, promote healthy practices, and reduce the risk of malnutrition among newborns.
“As we committed to this Rotary year, the magic of Rotary, we started in, we came in last year, July 6th, and we lined up our programs for the year, and part of it that was a priority is maternal and child health. We executed a maternal and child health project last year in July. For this one, we saw the need again, and then to reach out to specific pregnant women and breastfeeding mothers”.
Adia noted that the Rotary Club’s donation is a significant step towards improving maternal and child health in the community. “By providing these essential kits, the Rotary Foundation is helping to ensure that nursing mothers have the resources they need to care for their newborns and promote healthy growth and development.
“The Rotary Club’s initiative is a shining example of the organisation’s commitment to making a positive impact in the lives of others”.
The immediate past president of the Rotary Club of Abuja Ministers Hill, Amb. Daniel Etameta commended the president for moving on with the project initiative.
He said, “The Rotary Club’s initiative to combat malnutrition has been well-received in the community, thanks to its collaborative approach. By working closely with community heads and leadership and establishing a community liaison and corps, they’ve ensured that the community understands the importance of their projects. This engagement has fostered a sense of ownership and cooperation, crucial for the project’s sustainability.
The project director of the Rotary Club of Abuja Ministers Hill, Rtn. Nicholas Adhekoyibo said the community health centre plays a crucial role in identifying and registering nursing mothers and pregnant women needing support. “By partnering with the centre, we can access a list of registered individuals and tailor their services to meet their specific needs.
“With a list of registered nursing mothers and pregnant women, you can design and deliver services that cater to their unique needs”.
Also, the president-elect of the Rotary Club of Abuja Ministers Hill, Rtn. Adams Oyarekhua said, “We recognise the importance of child health and believe it’s crucial to support nursing mothers and pregnant women and ensure kids grow well. Our projects focus on disease prevention and control to make the community safe and habitable, prioritising health above all.
“He assured that the initiative would continue over time, relying on donations. Rotary Club of Abuja Ministers Hill is committed to keeping our word and making a positive impact. Our goal is to create a safe environment where pregnant women can thrive and children can grow into healthy adults.
“These initiatives demonstrate the club’s commitment to community development and improving the quality of life for residents”.
The community head, Chief Salihu Adamu, who was represented by Iliyasu Adamu, expressed the community’s gratitude to the Rotary Club of Abuja Ministers Hill. “We appreciate the impactful work they’ve done for us. The Rotary Club has been instrumental in providing healthcare services, especially for women and children,” he said.
“One major challenge is the lack of primary healthcare services nearby. However, the Rotary Club has been bridging this gap by bringing essential services closer to our community. We’re thrilled about this development and believe it will significantly benefit our community, particularly expectant mothers.
“We’re grateful for the Rotary Club’s efforts and look forward to more initiatives that will improve our lives,” he added.
