A 45 – year- old man, identified as Ukeme Johnson Obonukut, has been sentenced to  five years imprisonment for vandalising solar street lights infrastructure along Barracks road linking Idung Eka Uyo and Ikot Udo Abia villages in Ukanafun local government area.

The convict, who hails from Ikot Udo Abia village, according to the particulars of the case, “was in 2025 arrested by vigilant youths while committing the crime, and subsequently handed over to the Police, who arraigned him before the Magistrate court.”

Convict Obonukut, who was arraigned before Senior Magistrate Ifiok Ubom, on a two – count charge of conspiracy and vandalism in charge number UKM/11c/2025, was found guilty of committing the crime and consequently sentenced to five years imprisonment without an option of fine.

Magistrate Ubom, who frowned at the actions of some unpatriotic persons in the habit of engaging in such sharp practices, urged the youths to always engage themselves in worthy ventures to avoid being caught by the long arm of the law.

Reacting to the judgment, residents of the community commended the ruling, hoping it would serve as a deterrent to others, lamenting that indiscriminate vandalisation of public assets have been so rife across the state.
