The Mango Foundation, spearheaded by former professional basketball player and current aeronautics engineer Yusuf O. Yakubu, is set to host its 2nd edition of the 80-Man Basketball Camp, taking place from September 19th to 21st, 2024, in Kaduna State.

Addressing newsmen yesterday in Abuja, Yakubu stated that the initiative, designed to give back to the community and promote local talent, aims to provide young, aspiring basketball players from across Nigeria’s 36 states with world-class training, mentorship, and exposure to help them pursue their dreams both on and off the court.

In his address, Yakubu reflected on his journey from the basketball courts of Nigeria to a career in aeronautics, emphasizing the lack of infrastructure and resources that young Nigerian athletes face.

“We had the talent, no doubt, but there was no system to help nurture that talent,” he said.

He stressed the need for investment in grassroots sports, highlighting how countries like the U.S. invest millions into youth sports development, something that is lacking in Nigeria.

Yakubu underscored that the camp is not just about honing basketball skills, but about developing life skills such as discipline, leadership, and teamwork.

He further stated that he is committed to mentoring young players, preparing them for both athletic and academic success. The initiative also aims to bridge the knowledge gap faced by Nigerian athletes, particularly in navigating the complex clearance process for international play.

He emphasized that the camp is a response to challenges young athletes face, including a lack of exposure to world-class coaching and facilities, and favoritism in the Nigerian basketball scene.

“I am dedicated to creating a meritocratic system where talent and hard work are rewarded,” he added.

Despite the financial and logistical hurdles involved in organizing such an event, Yakubu remains determined to make this camp a flagship event for Nigerian basketball. His long-term vision includes securing scholarships for promising players to study and play in the U.S. and beyond, helping them overcome financial barriers to success.

He reiterated that with the support of the community, state governments, and stakeholders, the Mango Foundation aims to create a future where young Nigerian athletes can achieve their dreams.

He said, “Together, we can build a future where every child with a dream has the chance to achieve it.”
