The father of the late Miss Mary Habila, Tanko Habila, has petitioned the Inspector-General of Police (IGP), demanding the immediate release of his daughter’s remains for burial.
Habila, accompanied by his wife, other family members and their legal representatives, submitted the petition at the Force Headquarters in Abuja on Friday before addressing journalists.
The family expressed frustration that nearly two weeks after Mary Habila’s death, the Ebonyi State Police Command had yet to release her body for burial.
Speaking after the family’s lawyer, Tanko Habila said the prolonged withholding of his daughter’s remains had compounded the family’s grief, stressing that their only request was to give her a dignified burial.
According to him, the family is not interested in an autopsy.
“As we are standing here, somebody can fall and die. It has happened. All we want is her body to be buried,” he said.
The petition came amid growing public attention over the circumstances surrounding the death of Miss Habila, a nurse who reportedly died at the residence of the Minister of Works.
The family has continued to insist that the police release her remains without further delay, while urging the authorities to respect their wishes and allow them to perform her final rites.
The Nigeria Police Force has yet to publicly respond to the family’s latest petition or explain why the remains have not been released.
