France underlined their FIFA World Cup title credentials with a commanding 4-1 victory over Norway in Friday’s Group I showdown, as Kylian Mbappé stole the spotlight in the much-anticipated battle with Erling Haaland.

Although Haaland’s presence had dominated the pre-match build-up, it was Mbappé who dictated proceedings, providing two assists and leading France to a convincing win that secured top spot in the group.

Ousmane Dembélé gave Les Bleus the perfect start after just seven minutes, finishing clinically from Mbappé’s pass before the pair combined again in the 20th minute to double France’s advantage.

Norway responded almost immediately when Thelo Aasgaard reduced the deficit a minute later after being set up by Andreas Schjelderup, briefly raising hopes of a comeback.

However, France quickly restored their two-goal cushion in the 32nd minute as Dembélé completed a brilliant first-half hat-trick, this time converting Aurélien Tchouaméni’s assist to send Didier Deschamps’ side into the interval with a commanding 3-1 lead.

Norway had a golden opportunity to claw their way back after the restart, but Jørgen Strand Larsen squandered a penalty in the 50th minute, allowing France to maintain complete control of the contest.

Tensions flared late on when Tchouaméni entered the referee’s notebook in the 74th minute, but there was still time for France to add further gloss to the scoreline.

Deep into stoppage time, substitute Désiré Doué rounded off an outstanding French display, finishing calmly after Bradley Barcola’s assist to complete a comprehensive 4-1 triumph.

The victory confirmed France as Group I winners with a perfect record, while Norway progressed to the knockout stage as runners-up despite suffering their first defeat of the tournament.
