At least 9 persons have been reported dead and 54 persons, including a presidential candidate, Alvarez Maynez have been rushed to the hospital as heavy wind collapsed campaign stage in Mexico on Wednesday.

Videos shared on social media showed the moment a heavy storm collapsed the stage while the candidate and his team scampered for safety.

A large video screen also fell on the stage and part of the audience area.

Candidate Alvarez have disclosed that he was not really injured in the commotion which happened at the Northeastern City of San Pedro Garza Garcia.

Governor Garcia confirmed in his X (formerly Twitter) handle, that at least 54 people were injured and some others including a minor are dead.

He assured that rescue operations were at work to save people trapped under the collapsed stage.

Mexico’s meteorological service had earlier forecast powerful winds across the region, warning of winds of up to 70 kilometers per hour (43 miles per hour) beginning Wednesday afternoon.

Alvarez have disclosed to newsmen that he would suspend all campaign activities after the collapse but would remain in the state to monitor both the situation and the victims.

“We have to have solidarity, there is nothing that can repair an accident, a damage of this nature, and people will not be alone in this tragedy and through the consequences that this tragedy will have in their lives,” he said.

He added that the campaign structure had been checked by the civil defense prior to the event, and that the weight of the storm took ‘everyone’ by surprise.

Mexico is set to have the largest election in the history of the country on June 2 where over 28 candidates have been attacked with 16 killed, according to data from the research group data Civica.
