Midnight Fire Razes Market In Delta

Barely two weeks after Ogbe-Ijaw market in Warri, Warri south local government area, Delta State was razed down by fire, shops at Mciver Market, a stone throw from Ogbe-Ijaw Market, were razed down yesterday morning.

Goods and property worth millions of naira were destroyed during the incident while the unfortunate fire incident did not claim any life.

It was gathered that the fire started in the early hours of Monday morning but eye witnesses could not confirm the exact time it started.

Though the cause of the fire was yet-to-be identified, witnesses alleged that it emanated from someone who left a burning fire unattended to.

Traders, who were affected by the inferno lamented that all their lives’ savings were gone, especially in this dwindling economy.

They called on the state government to come to their rescue and help rebuild the market.

When the executive chairman of Warri south local government council, Dr Michael Tidi, was contacted, he confirmed that it was an incident too many.

 

He assured that he would set up a committee to look into the matter and that the committee’s findings will be made known to the press.

 

Tidi however warned against storing of inflammable substances in the market in order to forestall a reoccurrence of such an incident.
