Minister of state for Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Alleviation, Dr Yusuf Tanko Sununu, has commissioned a state-of-the-art edifice at the Federal Teaching Hospital (FTH) of the Federal Medical Centre (FMC), Birnin Kebbi, Kebbi State.
The edifice contains a modern orthopaedic theatre and wards for healthcare delivery in the centre.
The commissioning also marked the official handover of the edifice to the management of the Federal Teaching Hospital.
During the commissioning, the minister said the project was sponsored by him when he was the member representing Shanga/Yauri federal constituency at the National Assembly as part of constituency projects.
Dr Sununu expressed gratitude to God for allowing him to become a politician, noting that the project at the medical Centre and others at federal hospitals would have been difficult if not as a politician.
The minister told the gathering that he had constructed many facilities, assisted vulnerable and unemployed youths and women in Kebbi State when he was a member of the House of Representatives as well as minister of state for education.
Earlier, the chief medical director of the Federal Medical Centre, Birnin Kebbi, Dr Aliyu Hamza Arabe commended the collaborative efforts of the Federal Ministry of Health; the minister, Hon Yusuf Sununu and management of the FMC Birnin Kebbi for the construction of the befitting facility.
Dr Arabe further disclosed that before now, the FMC had one edifice which could contain only 25 for orthopaedic patients per time but with the commissioning of a new facility, it will now accommodate 52 patients.
He added that there was only one theatre room but the new edifice allocated three rooms for surgery.
The CMD noted that the FMC Birnin Kebbi can now compete favourably with other medical centres in the country in terms of diagnosis of injuries sustained as a result of accidents and other ailments.
