Le Roux, 24, shared the news in a statement on Friday, expressing gratitude for the overwhelming support she has received while explaining the difficult decision to prioritise her health.

“I am profoundly thankful for the unwavering support from South Africa during my time at Miss Universe. Making this decision has been incredibly challenging, knowing the dreams and hopes that have been placed upon me,” Le Roux said. “However, I am deeply grateful to have the opportunity to focus on my health and recovery so that I may continue to serve my country with full strength.”

The Miss South Africa Organisation also released a statement expressing its support for Le Roux’s decision, praising her courage during a difficult time. “Mia has shown incredible courage and grace throughout this period,” the organisation stated. “Her health and well-being are our utmost priority, and we stand by her side, dedicated to ensuring she regains her strength and returns to full health.”

Le Roux’s withdrawal has added to a tumultuous year for the Miss South Africa pageant.

LEADERSHIP recalls that Chidimma Adetshina, a contestant of both Nigerian and South African heritage, pulled out of the competition following a social media controversy surrounding her nationality. Born in Soweto to a Nigerian father and a South African mother of Mozambican descent, Adetshina, 23, faced backlash over her eligibility to compete.

The controversy escalated when the South African Home Affairs Ministry launched an investigation, revealing allegations of identity theft involving Adetshina’s mother. Despite the setback, Adetshina was later invited to compete in the Miss Universe Nigeria 2024 pageant, where she emerged as the winner.

Le Roux, who descends from Dutch settlers known as Boers, was subsequently crowned Miss South Africa 2024 following Adetshina’s departure from the competition.
