The Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA), on Sunday, announced the death of a yet-to-be-identified female adult, an infant, while other 10 passengers were injured in an accident on Ikorodu Road, Lagos State.
In a statement by the Director, Public Affairs and Enlightenment Department of LASTMA,
Adebayo Taofiq, he said the accident involved a luxury bus that skidded off its lane to hit an oncoming vehicle in another lane.
According to Taofiq, the luxury bus suffered brake failure after excessive speed, thereby leading to the death of the two passengers while injuring others.
“LASTMA announced with sorrow the occurrence of a ghastly road traffic collision that happened earlier today along Ikorodu Road, Lagos. Preliminary findings indicate that a red long Tata commercial bus on speed from Palmgroove inward Anthony, suddenly lost control and the bus veered off its lane, crossing the median and crashed into a moving Volkswagen commercial bus conveying passengers from Anthony toward Palmgroove.
“The impact resulted in the death of an adult female passenger aboard the Volkswagen bus, while an eight-month-old female infant tragically succumbed to injuries sustained in the collision. The loss of lives has plunged the entire corridor and community into profound mourning,” Adebayo stated.
Adebayo further stated that several passengers who were wounded were evacuated to the hospital, while the wrecks were evacuated from the road.
He explained that the Lagos State Ambulance Service (LASAMBUS) promptly transported the injured victims to nearby medical facilities while officials of the State Environmental Health Monitoring Unit (SEHMU) evacuated the remains of the deceased.
“LASTMA operatives, supported by members of the public, helped with a rescue operation that led to the evacuation of a total of 10 victims, including the drivers of both vehicles, who sustained varying degrees of serious injuries. “LASAMBUS promptly transported the injured victims to nearby medical facilities for immediate and comprehensive medical attention, while officials of SEHMU evacuated the remains of the deceased infant and adult female. Security operatives from the Ilupeju Police Division provided security coverage throughout the duration of the rescue and recovery exercise.”
The General Manager of LASTMA, Olalekan Bakare-Oki, consoled the bereaved families, especially the distraught mother of the deceased infant, who also sustained severe injuries and is presently undergoing medical treatment.
He described the incident as a collective moment of grief for parents and all people of conscience, offering fervent prayers for divine consolation for the bereaved and speedy recovery for the 10 injured victims.
