Mother Of 5 Dies After Alleged Surgical Error In Kano Hospital

A Kano-based family has accused the Abubakar Imam Urology Centre of medical negligence following the death of a housewife, Aishatu Umar, who allegedly suffered months of severe abdominal pain after a surgical procedure in which a pair of scissors was left inside her tummy.

The allegation was made public by a family member, Abubakar Mohammed, in a social media post in which he also shared images of the deceased and the scan result showing scissors allegedly forgotten in the woman’s body after the surgery.

Mohammed said Aishatu died at about 1 a.m. on Monday after enduring persistent pain since undergoing surgery at the facility in September 2025.

According to him, the deceased, who was his sister-in-law, fell ill while living in Kano and was taken to the urology centre for surgical treatment. He claimed that shortly after the operation, Aishatu Umar began experiencing severe abdominal pain and repeatedly returning to the hospital.

“Following the surgery, she suffered from severe abdominal pain. Whenever she went back to the hospital, she was only given pain relievers,” Mohammed wrote, adding that the pain persisted for about four months.

Mohammed further alleged that it was only two days before her death that medical tests and scans were eventually conducted, revealing that a pair of scissors had been left inside her body during the September operation.

He said arrangements were being made for a corrective surgery, but Aishatu died on Monday, January 12, 2026, before the procedure could be carried out.

“She is survived by her husband and five children,” Mohammed wrote, describing the incident as “pure negligence” and calling on authorities to ensure justice. “Is this not pure negligence? Truly, every soul has its appointed time, but how can professional doctors forget scissors inside a patient? This tarnishes the reputation of healthcare workers and health authorities.”

Following the allegations, the Kano State Hospitals Management Board has ordered a thorough investigation into the incident.

In a statement issued on Tuesday by the Board’s Public Relations Officer, Samira Suleiman, the Executive Secretary of the Board, Dr. Mansur Mudi Nagoda, said an immediate and comprehensive probe has been directed to ascertain the facts and circumstances surrounding the matter at the Abubakar Imam Urology Centre.

“The Management of the Kano State Hospitals Management Board has taken note of the distressing report concerning the late Aishatu Umar,” the statement said, extending condolences to her family and loved ones.

It assured the public that the investigation would be transparent, impartial, and professional, adding that appropriate action would be taken in line with established regulations if any negligence was established.

“Patient safety remains our utmost priority, and the Board is committed to upholding the highest standards of healthcare delivery in Kano State,” the statement added.

The incident has sparked widespread public concerns on social media, with images shared by the family circulating widely and netizens demanding accountability.
