The mother of a 12-year-old pupil who is suffering from a brain tumour, Mrs Rukayat Mohammed, has appealed to Nigerians to help her raise the N2million the hospital charged for a surgical operation on her child.

The victim, a pupil of a privately owned nursery and primary school in Ilorin, Kwara State, has been diagnosed with a brain tumour and hydrocephalus at the University of Ilorin Teaching Hospital (UITH).

Mrs Mohammed, who walked into LEADERSHIP’s office in Ilorin yesterday, said: “We were able to raise funds for the hydrocephalus, but the brain tumour will cost the sum of N2m .”

The medical report signed by radiologists at the UITH, Drs. Elonye/Olagunju/Owolabi J.I reads:

“Fairly oval-shaped, slightly hyperdense mass with irregular margins (HU-43) is seen arising from the vermis of the cerebellum, compressing and distorting the 4th ventricle anteriorly. It measures 45 x 44mm in size and shows multiple areas of hypodensities (range HU= 13-15) within it, suggestive of cystic changes.

“There are also foci of hyperdensities (HU-85) suggestive of calcification. This lesion shows enhancement on all post-contrast series. The sulci-gyri pattern is within normal limits. There is moderate dilatation of both lateral ventricles and 3rd ventricle, suggestive of non-communicating hydrocephalus.

“The midline is preserved. Both inferior nasal turbinates are enlargement suggestive of rhinitis. Both orbits, paranasal sinuses, skull vault and base, are within normal limits.

“Conclusion: Posterior fossa mass with non-communicating hydrocephalus Differential: -Medulloblastoma.”
