Daniel Munoz’s late strike sent Colombia into the FIFA World Cup knockout stage as Los Cafeteros secured a deserved 1-0 victory over DR Congo in Guadalajara.
Backed by a passionate crowd, Colombia dominated large spells of the Group K encounter and were finally rewarded in the 76th minute when Crystal Palace wing-back Daniel Munoz broke the deadlock.
The decisive moment came after a clever pass from Juan Fernando Quintero released Munoz inside the area. The defender’s left-footed effort took a deflection off a DR Congo player, wrong-footing goalkeeper Lionel Mpasi before nestling inside the near post.
The victory gave Colombia a second consecutive win in the group, lifting them to the summit of Group K and guaranteeing their place in the last 32 of the tournament.
Munoz had threatened to score from the opening minutes. He squandered a golden opportunity inside four minutes when he fired into the side netting after Jhon Arias’ effort had been parried into his path by Mpasi. Moments later, the 30-year-old thought he had opened the scoring after converting from close range following a saved header, only for the offside flag to deny him.
Colombia continued to dictate proceedings during a relentless first-half display, but Mpasi produced a series of important saves to keep DR Congo level.
The South Americans maintained their dominance after the interval and should have taken the lead five minutes into the second half. Luis Diaz found himself one-on-one with Mpasi but failed to hit the target, while Arias dragged the rebound wide.
As frustration threatened to grow, Quintero unlocked the Congolese defence with a perfectly weighted pass, allowing Munoz to finally find the breakthrough that Colombia’s performance deserved.
DR Congo responded by pushing forward in search of an equaliser during the closing stages, but Colombia stood firm to seal a vital victory.
The result leaves DR Congo in third place in the group and facing a must-win final match against Uzbekistan if they are to keep their hopes of reaching the knockout rounds alive. Colombia, meanwhile, can look ahead to the next phase of the competition after another impressive display.
