Muslim women have been charged to stay away from social media and concentrate on what will edify them during the month of Ramadan.
The admonition came from a renowned Islamic scholar and Hisbah commander in Dawakin Kudu, Kano State, Mrs Saratu Saiyada.

She said surfing social media amounts to a waste of time as one tends to be exposed to inappropriate materials and things that are not important except when they serve as sources of livelihood.
Saiyada spoke at a one-day Ramadan lecture for women journalists organised by the national secretary of the National Association of Women Journalists (NAWOJ) in Kano.
She said, ā€œThis is because it is a waste of time. Ramadan is one of the blessed months and a season to seek God’s forgiveness and His will. So, it’s not proper for us to waste our time, especially when we are doing what is not impactful.

ā€œThis is the month God shows mercy, forgives and hears our cries; that’s why I saw it necessary for me to draw the attention of women to reduce spending their precious time on social media.
ā€œInstead of wasting that time, we should use it to seek for God’s mercy and pray to God to answer our supplications in this holy month by concentrating on what will edify us, reading the holy book (Quran) and praying for ourselves, children and the nation,ā€ she stressed.

NAWOJ national secretary, Wasila Ladan, thanked Kano chapter members for turning out to listen to what will help them in their religion and in their daily activities.
She, however, noted that the event was the first of its kind in the state and that the group hoped to roll out various programmes that would be beneficial to its members.
