Presidential candidate of Labour Party (LP), Mr. Peter Obi has said he is leading a movement to rescue Nigeria and prevent the nation from going under.
Speaking in Lagos after the defection of Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) governorship candidate in Anambra State in the 2021 governorship election Hon.Valentine Ozigbo and his supporters who defected into Labour Party, Obi said he is committed to change the narrative in the country from being dependent on importation of goods and services.
He said lack of goods being exported and the neglect of improving Nigeria export by past leaders was the bane of Nigeria’s problem.
The presidential candidate added that the trend accounted for depreciation in the value of the Naira and brain drain, which forced the best professionals to quit the country for better climes.
According to him, “The wealth of a country is measured in terms of production capacity, especially the youths, not necessarily in terms of natural resources.”
He explained that Israel is a small country but it exports more products than Nigeria despite her lesser population, saying “Nigeria needs to be productive, we need a productive country. We want a country where our children will live in a better society, because of the decadence in the society, parents now send their children abroad to study, making the parents live a lonely life. It is not good, it is important we do the right thing for them to come back to Nigeria.”
Obi said Nigeria has competent people capable of turning the country around so that it can be comfortable and secured.
He said there is the need to provide security, because people don’t feel secure moving around in the country again.
Receiving those that decamped to the party, the national chairman of LP Barrister Julius Abure said the Obi movement has crystalised the development in the party, increased its chances of winning elections and has further endeared the party to many Nigerians, particularly the youths.
He said LP was careful in selecting its candidates, adding that the party is fielding candidates who are credible and capable of winning elections.
Abure said “many Nigerians are living below poverty level, because the inflation rate keep increasing and there is the need to salvage the situation so that people will not resort to going to the dunghill to look for food, it is good we rescue this country that is why Peter Obi is contesting.”
