The National Association of Aircraft Pilots and Engineers (NAAPE), is set to introduce a loss of licence insurance scheme to strengthen the welfare and financial security of pilots and licensed aircraft engineers whose careers could be disrupted by the loss of their professional licences.

The initiative was the focus of a strategic engagement between NAAPE’s national executive council and representatives of ETG and Epicure Insurance Brokers at a meeting in Lagos.

Spokesperson of NAAPE, Engr. Blessing Ahmadu said in a statement on Wednesday that during the meeting, the union received a presentation on the proposed insurance scheme, covering its scope, eligibility requirements, underwriting capacity, claims administration process and examples of how similar products operate in other countries.

Speaking at the meeting, NAAPE national president, Captain Bunmi Gindeh said the association was committed to developing practical welfare initiatives that go beyond its traditional role of negotiating better working conditions.

According to him, a professional licence represents years of training, experience and sacrifice for pilots and aircraft engineers, making it essential to provide financial protection when unforeseen medical conditions or other qualifying circumstances prevent members from continuing their careers.

He said the association would continue to work with industry stakeholders to evaluate initiatives that improve members’ welfare while promoting professionalism, aviation safety and the sustainable development of Nigeria’s aviation sector.

The discussions also examined broader opportunities to expand insurance and risk management solutions tailored to the evolving needs of aviation professionals, with the aim of improving their economic well-being and professional resilience.

Also, chief executive officer of Epicure Insurance Brokers, Mrs. Oyinpreye Aigbogun commended NAAPE’s leadership for its commitment to protecting members’ careers and financial well-being through specialised insurance products.

She said the engagement provided an opportunity to discuss how the Loss of Licence Insurance solution could support pilots, aircraft engineers and the wider aviation community by mitigating the financial impact of career interruptions resulting from the loss of professional licences.

Both organisations agreed to continue discussions on making specialised insurance solutions more accessible to aviation professionals in Nigeria.
