NACCIMA Seeks Grassroots Impact On Nigeria’s $1tn Economy Push

The Nigerian Association of Chambers of Commerce, Industry, Mines and Agriculture (NACCIMA) has said Nigeria’s drive towards a $1tn economy must prioritise impact at the grassroots to be meaningful and inclusive.

NACCIMA President, Jani Ibrahim, stated this during a courtesy visit by the association’s delegation to the palace of the Emir of Kano, Muhammadu Sanusi II, in Kano on Thursday.

“Our business has a challenge, and that is to move Nigeria to a $1tn economy. But in doing so, we also want that economy to get to the grassroots. It must get to the grassroots,” Ibrahim said.

He noted that the delegation, drawn from across Nigeria and neighbouring countries, underscored the wide reach of the chamber movement, which he described as one of the largest in Africa.

According to him, the team visited the ancient Kurmi Market to assess real sector activities at the local level. “If you are looking for grassroots engagement, you cannot have it better than what we saw at Kurmi Market,” he said, adding that the market’s long history reflects Kano’s enduring status as a commercial hub.

Ibrahim also reaffirmed NACCIMA’s commitment to youth and women empowerment, noting that its youth entrepreneurship platform aims to produce wealth creators rather than job seekers.

Responding on behalf of the Emir, Senior Councillor and Matawallen Kano Alh. Ali Ibrahim Ahmad commended the association’s initiatives, particularly its focus on youth development.

He said programmes that promote entrepreneurship were critical, given Nigeria’s youthful population and rising unemployment.

“It is commendable that NACCIMA is encouraging young people to become job creators instead of job seekers,” he said.

Ahmad also urged the delegation to explore Kano’s cultural heritage, including Kofar Mata Dye Pits and Gidan Makama Museum.

He appreciated the visit and expressed hope for sustained collaboration between the traditional institution and the organised private sector.
