At least 23 suspected bandits were killed after Nigerian military airstrikes targeted armed groups fleeing Kano State following attacks on Shanono and Tsanyawa local government areas of the State.

The Nigerian Army said the attacks were launched on the night of January 1 and extended into the early hours of January 2, 2026. Consequently, troops of the Joint Task Force in Kano State reportedly contained the attacks and inflicted heavy casualties on the assailants.

In a statement issued on January 3 by the Assistant Director, Army Public Relations, 3 Brigade, Major Babatunde Zubairu, the Army disclosed that the fleeing bandits were tracked to Karaduwa village in Matazu local government area of neighbouring Katsina State.

According to the statement, the Air Component of Operation FANSAN YAMMA pursued the armed group and carried out a precision airstrike after intelligence revealed that the bandits had gathered to bury their slain members at Dan Marke in Matazu LGA.

Aerial Intelligence, Surveillance and Reconnaissance (ISR) missions reportedly monitored the movement of the bandits until their motorcycles converged after crossing a dry river bed, prompting the strike.

The Army said the operation resulted in “at least 23 terrorists neutralizsd,” while several others were believed to have been injured. The airstrike also damaged weapons and equipment belonging to the bandits.

The Commander, 3 Brigade Nigerian Army commended the Air Component and ground troops for their performance, saying, “Their bravery and resilience in the face of adversity are commendable.”
