The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) has confirmed that the NIVEA Black & White Invisible Roll-On deodorant, manufactured locally in Nigeria, is safe for consumer use.
This reassurance followed a safety alert issued by NAFDAC on October 31, 2024, which highlighted concerns regarding a specific batch of the product identified as batch number 93529610.
This batch had been flagged in the European Union’s Rapid Alert System for Dangerous Non-Food Products (RAPEX) due to the presence of a now-banned ingredient in the EU.
NAFDAC’s updated alert on November 2 clarified that the NIVEA Black & White Roll-On batch produced in Nigeria does not contain the non-compliant ingredient BMHCA, known as LilialTM.
“A recent investigation shows that the Black and White Nivea Roll-on deodorant manufactured in Nigeria does not contain the non-compliant ingredient (BMHCA)”, NAFDAC said in the updated alert notification.
Beiersdorf, the company behind NIVEA, emphasised that the flagged batch in question was not marketed in Nigeria and had expired in January 2022 before the European Union’s updated regulation banning Lilial in cosmetics took effect on March 1, 2022.
Beiersdorf also noted that since 2020, all formulations of NIVEA products, including the Black & White Roll-On, have been Lilial-free globally, ensuring compliance well before the EU deadline.
Beiersdorf has reiterated its dedication to consumer safety and has actively collaborated with NAFDAC to uphold international quality standards.
The company further assured that all its NIVEA products in Nigeria align with global best practices
