National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) has condemned the recent plot to impeach the Ondo State deputy governor Luck Aiyedatiwa over allegations of gross misconduct.
In a press statement made available to LEADERSHIP by its director of Action Mobilisation, Comrade Zakari Hashim, NANS called on Governor Rotimi Akeredolu to prioritise his health recovery and put a stop to the “baseless allegations.”
“It is imperative to note that the Deputy Governor has not committed any offence or contradict any sections of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria that warrant the threat of impeachment from the State Assembly. To the best of our knowledge, he has been a loyal and outstanding Deputy Governor, performing excellently during his tenure in an acting capacity while the Governor was on a foreign medical trip,” the group said.
The student body called upon the governor and the state lawmakers to withdraw any petition for impeachment against the deputy governor, saying the peace and stability of the state should be prioritised above personal interests.
“NANS stands firm in advocating for justice and fairness in our beloved Ondo. We believe that political stability is essential for the progress and development of our state, and baseless allegations and impeachment threats only serve to destabilize our government.
“We call upon all stakeholders in the state to come together in the spirit of unity and cooperation for the betterment of our great state. Let us focus on the welfare and well-being of our citizens and work towards a brighter future,” it added.
