Former Minister of Information and Culture, Mr. Labaran Maku, has promised to sustain the legacy of performance introduced by the late Senator Godiya Akwashiki.

The former minister made the pledge when he and his campaign team visited the late Akwashiki’s ancestral home in Angba-Iggah, Nassarawa Eggon LGA of Nasarawa State.

The team was received by the father of the late Senator, Mr. Akwashiki Awalaro.

Our correspondent reports that the Akwashiki family patriarch endorsed the former minister as a worthy replacement for his son.

Accepting the endorsement, Maku, a former deputy governor of the state, pledged to uphold the late Senator’s legacy through concrete actions.

The former minister, among other things, promised to complete all ongoing projects initiated by the late Senator.

He also pledged to retain Akwashiki’s team, including aides and staff, if he emerges victorious.

He equally vowed to establish a foundation in honour of the late lawmaker to train leaders and support the poor across Nasarawa North Senatorial District.

The former minister expressed his commitment to job creation, youth and women empowerment, and lobbying for additional federal projects to improve living standards in Nasarawa North.

“Sen. Akwashiki was the best Senator Nasarawa State ever produced due to his achievements and giant developmental strides. I will give quality representation and purposeful leadership,” Maku said.

Speaking earlier, Awalaro stated that the decision to endorse Maku was to honor the late Senator’s explicit instruction: “My son, late Senator Godiya Akwashiki, told me and the entire family that in case he died, we should support Mr. Labaran Maku to replace him in the Senate.”

He added that Sen. Akwashiki often recounted Maku’s unwavering support during his own campaigns, including Maku’s refusal to accept financial gifts, urging instead that the funds be used to execute projects across Nasarawa North communities.

“The only way to pay back Maku is for the entire family to support and vote for him,” Awalaro said.

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has scheduled the bye-election for Nasarawa North for June 20.
