Nasarawa North Stakeholders Reject Zoning Of Governorship Seat

The Nasarawa North People’s Assembly and the 143 Support Group has said zoning the governorship seat will affect the fortunes of the governing All Progressives Congress (APC) ahead of the 2027 general elections in Nasarawa State.

They made the observation at a solidarity rally in Akwanga, the headquarters of the zone yesterday.

On behalf of the group, Hon. Isa Nathaniel, said the APC risks far more than temporary disagreements if it mishandles the 2027 gubernatorial ticket.

He said the party risks deep-seated internal destabilisation capable of undermining the party’s electoral machinery.

He noted that since the governorship seat has gone round all the three senatorial districts that make up the state, zoning should be discontinued, and the contest democratised to enable the best candidate and the most popular to emerge.

He argued that Nasarawa’s political landscape has matured beyond the era when candidates could be imposed with minimal consequences. Today’s electorate, he stressed, is more politically conscious, more organized, and more willing to punish parties that appear disconnected from popular sentiment.

“In this new environment, political success depends on the party’s ability to synchronize elite consensus with grassroots legitimacy. Where this synchronization fails, fragmentation becomes inevitable,” he stated.

He said it is important that the governing party should take note of the emerging trend and democratised the political space for all aspirants.

He noted that for the Nasarawa North People’s Assembly Alhaji Mohammed Abubakar Adamu, Rtd. IGP possessed the experiences and credentials to lead the party to the next election, while describing him as a rare political convergence point, a figure whose appeal transcends senatorial zones, generational divides, and entrenched intra-party blocs.

” His long and distinguished career in public service, national exposure at the highest levels of security management, and sustained grassroots engagement since retirement have produced a political profile that blends institutional credibility with mass acceptance,” he pointed out.

“From this perspective, Rtd. IGP Adamu is positioned not merely as a strong aspirant, but as a stabilizing option, one capable of reducing post-primary grievances, limiting defections, and preserving party cohesion.

The Assembly warned that sidelining Adamu would not simply generate dissatisfaction among his supporters; it could fracture carefully constructed political coalitions that have taken multiple election cycles to build,” he stated.
