The Nasarawa State Independent Electoral Commission (NASIEC), has fixed August 31 for the conduct of local government elections in the state.
NASIEC chairman, Mr Ayuba Wandai, disclosed this at a stakeholders’ meeting with officials of the State Inter-Party Advisory Council (IPAC), yesterday in Lafia, the state capital.
He explained that the current chairmen and councillors were elected on Wednesday, Oct. 6, 2021, and were inaugurated on Friday, Oct. 8, 2021, for a three-year tenure that would end on Oct. 7.
He said the commission has been mandated by relevant law to commence preparation for election one year before the expiration of the tenure of the officials.
Wandai said that political parties were expected to conduct their primaries from Wednesday, Jan. 3, to Saturday, Feb. 24, to select their candidates for the election.
He said political parties must submit their candidates’ lists on or before Tuesday, February, 27.
According to him, sales of nomination forms would start on Wednesday, February 28 and end on Monday, March 11 and the candidates would be screened from Wednesday, March 13 to Friday, March 15.
He noted that based on the timetable, electioneering campaigns would commence on Wednesday, April 3 and end on Friday, August 30.
