Members of the National Assembly have pleaded with President Bola Tinubu to review his directive on police escorts withdrawal from Very Important Persons (VIPs), saying they won’t be able to travel to their constituencies without protection.

Senate President Godswill Akpabio disclosed this on Friday in a welcome address at a joint sitting of the National Assembly to receive the proposed 2026 Budget from President Tinubu.

Akpabio, at the end of his welcome address, pointedly told Tinubu that fellow lawmakers had asked him to deliver the message on their plight at the occasion.

“As we direct the security agencies to withdraw policemen from critical areas, some of the National Assembly members said I should let you know that they may not be able to go home today. On that note, we plead with Mr President for a review of the decision,” Akpabio said.

LEADERSHIP reports that the directive for police withdrawals from VIPs was given by President Tinubu in order to bolster police deployment to tackle insecurity in parts of the country as part the state of emergency measures declared.
