A political pressure group, Kogi Central Progressive Elites, has criticised the Obi-Kwankwaso Movement over its call for an Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) investigation into the cash empowerment programme organised by Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan.
The group described the call for an investigation as politically motivated, alleging that it was aimed at undermining the senator’s growing political influence ahead of the 2027 general elections.
In a statement signed by its Assistant Publicity Secretary, Comrade Isah Jonny, the group said attempts to portray the empowerment programme as vote-buying were premature without established evidence.
It maintained that constituency empowerment initiatives should not be treated as criminal activities simply because they involve financial assistance to beneficiaries.
While acknowledging the need for public officials to be accountable, the group cautioned against using anti-corruption agencies to settle political differences.
It added that allegations should not be treated as proof of wrongdoing and that any investigation must be guided by credible evidence and due process.
The group also expressed confidence in Akpoti-Uduaghan’s representation, citing her legislative activities, grassroots engagement and empowerment programmes as evidence of her commitment to her constituents.
It insisted that the senator’s political future should be determined by voters in Kogi Central rather than pressure groups or political opponents.
The group further dismissed threats by opponents to mobilise against her return to the National Assembly, challenging them to present alternative candidates with verifiable achievements and clear development plans.
It urged political actors to focus on issues affecting the constituency rather than personal attacks.
The group also called on the senator’s supporters to remain calm and united, insisting that the 2027 general elections would provide an opportunity for constituents to assess her performance.
“The people have a voice, the people have a choice, and the people reserve the ultimate democratic mandate. Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan must not be distracted from the responsibility of representing her people,” the statement said.
