The Onono Onimisi Foundation has applauded Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan, representing Kogi Central, for moving a motion at the Senate on the need to rescue Nigerian women and children detained in Libyan prisons.
In a statement signed by its founder and chief executive officer, Onono Onimisi Rafatu, the foundation expressed concern over the victims’ plight, describing their condition as heartbreaking and unacceptable.
“We commend the distinguished senator for her bold and humanitarian call urging President Bola Tinubu’s administration to take immediate steps toward the rescue of these Nigerians,” the statement read.
The foundation condemned the continued detention and abuse of Nigerian women and children in Libya, labelling it a national shame and a gross violation of human rights.
“Nigeria owes these women sympathy and swift and deliberate action as a nation. Their suffering reminds us of the dangers of human trafficking and the need for stronger protective policies for Nigerians abroad,” Rafatu added.
She urged the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the National Agency for the Prohibition of Trafficking in Persons (NAPTIP) to begin the rescue and reintegration process immediately, with adequate psychological and economic support.
