Nigerian gospel singer and pastor Nathaniel Bassey has surpassed one billion views on YouTube, becoming the first African gospel artist to achieve the milestone on the video-sharing platform.
Statistics from his official YouTube channel, Nathaniel Bassey Main, showed that it had accumulated more than 1.014 billion views and 5.24 million subscribers as of Sunday, November 1, 2026.
The channel, created in March 2011, has grown over the years through Bassey’s gospel music releases, worship sessions and online prayer meetings.
The achievement comes amid the growing popularity of the Hallelujah Challenge, an online prayer and worship initiative founded by the minister in 2017.
The programme, which features midnight sessions of praise, worship and prayers, has attracted participants from different parts of the world. Its livestreams and recorded sessions have also contributed significantly to the channel’s growing viewership.
Bassey is known for popular gospel songs, including Imela, Onise Iyanu, Olowogbogboro and You Are God, which have earned him a wide audience among gospel music lovers.
The milestone highlights the growing reach of African gospel music on digital platforms and the role of online worship communities in connecting artists with audiences across geographical boundaries.
While the achievement has generated excitement among fans, Bassey has maintained that the Hallelujah Challenge is primarily focused on worship and spiritual devotion rather than revenue generation.
The one-billion-view milestone places the gospel minister among a select group of African music acts whose official YouTube channels have crossed the landmark figure.
