The Chief of the Naval Staff, Vice Admiral Idi Abbas, has stated that the special Air Shooting Novelty tournament, organised as part of the activities marking the Nigerian Navy’s 70th-anniversary celebration, not only provided a platform for healthy competition but also strengthened friendship, goodwill, and camaraderie among participants.

He remarked that shooting remains a powerful instrument for discipline, resilience, unity, and mutual respect.

Reflecting on their journey, he noted that the 70th-anniversary celebration serves as a reminder of the Service’s remarkable progression from its modest beginnings in 1956 to a professional, dependable, and forward-looking maritime force.

“The service has continued to play a vital role in safeguarding Nigeria’s maritime domain, supporting and contributing to peace, stability, and economic development. This anniversary, therefore, is not only a celebration of institutional longevity but also a tribute to sacrifice, service, professionalism, and commitment to national duty,” he said.

Vice Admiral Abbas commended all participants for the discipline, confidence, and sportsmanship displayed during the tournament. He reminded them that while scores and prizes are important features of any competition, “the greater value of today’s gathering lies in the bonds of friendship, unity, and goodwill that have been strengthened through this event.”

“I, therefore, congratulate every participant, not only for taking part but also for demonstrating the true spirit of sportsmanship,” he added.

He also thanked the executive members of the Nigerian Shooting Sports Federation for their support and partnership in the successful conduct of the tournament. “Your contribution has added colour and value to the Nigerian Navy’s 70th-anniversary celebration,” he stated.

The Chief of Administration, Naval Headquarters, Rear Admiral Jonathan Mamman, commended participants and coaches for gracing the occasion. He urged them to always prioritise safety by listening to instructions.

“I must say this here, safety is our top priority today. Please follow all range commands and instructions from officials at all times. To the competitors, may your aim be steady, your focus sharp, and your performance reflect the hours of practice you’ve put in. Win or lose, you are part of a community that values precision, respect, and integrity,” he advised.
