Golden State Warriors star Stephen Curry will miss at least five additional games due to a persistent issue with his right knee, the team announced yesterday.
The Warriors plan to reevaluate Curry in ten days, meaning he will not participate in upcoming fixtures against the Clippers, Rockets, Thunder, Jazz, and Bulls. He has already been sidelined for the previous ten games, during which the Warriors have recorded a 4-6 record without him.
“This is a peculiar situation,” Curry remarked during an in-game interview with ESPN’s Malika Andrews. “It’s unpredictable how it will heal.”
The injury has been described by the team as patellofemoral pain syndrome, commonly known as “runner’s knee,” which typically results in swelling and discomfort around the kneecap. Initially, the Warriors had been hopeful for Curry’s return following last month’s All-Star break; however, a setback during a workout that weekend led to him informing the athletic training staff that he wasn’t ready for live action upon returning to the facility.
As a result, the Warriors decided to halt his court activities for ten days. Curry was spotted in the locker room prior to Saturday’s game, performing weight-bearing squats on his right knee. While the team reports that he is making progress, he has yet to resume court work.
“It’s going to take a bit longer,” Curry stated. “Right now, it’s about accumulating good days. I’ve managed that, and hopefully, they can allow me back on the court soon, ideally sooner rather than later.”
Currently, the Warriors sit at 31-29, occupying the eighth seed and appear poised for the play-in tournament. Curry has consistently expressed a desire to return to the court and lead the Warriors into a playoff series, but significant hurdles remain before he can receive clearance.
“Staying in shape and strengthening everything else around my body is crucial because once I return, it’s a full sprint towards the playoffs,” Curry added. “When I get back on the court, it’s a matter of pain tolerance. It’s not something I want to drag on, as it could worsen.“
