NCC Raises Fresh Alarm Over Call Masking, Illegal Telecom Traffic

The Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) has raised fresh concerns over call masking in the telecommunications industry, warning that the practice poses risks to the integrity and security of Nigeria’s communications system.

The Commission said call masking, which involves the manipulation or alteration of the identity of a caller, could make it difficult to trace the true source of calls and create opportunities for fraudulent and criminal activities.

The NCC said it was taking steps to address the practice and ensure that telecom operators comply with established rules governing the identification and routing of calls.

The Commission’s warning comes amid growing concerns over the misuse of telecommunications platforms for criminal activities, including fraud and other forms of electronic crime.

The NCC said operators and other stakeholders in the telecommunications sector must strengthen their systems to detect and prevent activities capable of undermining the security and reliability of voice communications.

It also stressed the need for greater collaboration among telecom operators, regulators and security agencies to identify suspicious traffic and take appropriate action.

The Commission warned that efforts to combat call masking must be sustained to protect subscribers and preserve confidence in Nigeria’s telecommunications infrastructure.
