The Nigerian Correctional Service (NCoS) has warned Nigerians to be wary of fraudsters using its name and official logo to defraud unsuspecting members of the public.
In a statement issued on Saturday by its public relations officer, Chief Superintendent of Corrections J.N. Osuji, the Service disclosed that criminals are circulating a fake document titled “Payment/Mobilisation Request Form” to solicit money from victims under the guise of contract awards.
The agency categorically disowned the document, stressing that it did not originate from the NCoS and has no connection to its operations.
“The Service unequivocally states that this document did not originate from the NCoS. We operate strictly in accordance with extant Federal Government regulations and established due process in all procurement and contract-related matters,” the statement read.
The NCoS further clarified that it does not request or accept upfront payments, mobilisation fees, or any form of financial inducement from contractors or individuals at any stage of its processes.
It also revealed that fraudsters have gone as far as impersonating senior officials of the Service on social media, issuing fake contract offers and directing victims to pay money into private bank accounts.
Describing the scheme as a calculated attempt to exploit citizens, the Service urged the public to remain vigilant and verify all information before taking action.
The NCoS advised anyone who encounters such suspicious requests to promptly report them to relevant authorities, including the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) and the Nigeria Police Force.
