The Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) has zoned its presidential ticket for the 2027 general election to the South, while allocating the party’s 2031 presidential slot to the North.
The decision was reached on Saturday during the party’s national convention following the adoption of a resolution moved by Afam Victor and seconded by Seyi Sowumi.
The zoning arrangement, according to the party, is part of efforts to ensure rotational representation between the northern and southern regions in future presidential contests.
The convention also ratified all members of the party’s National Executive Committee (NEC) after a motion moved by Victor Umeh.
The development comes amid ongoing political realignments ahead of the 2027 general election and growing debate over power rotation between the North and South.
President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, who is from the South, is currently serving his first term in office following the completion of eight years of former President Muhammadu Buhari from the North.
Political observers believe the NDC’s decision may be linked to arguments that the South should complete its expected eight-year tenure before power returns to the North.
The party, however, did not announce any preferred presidential aspirant for the 2027 election at the convention.
