The Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC) has donated relief materials to flood victims in some communities in eight local government areas of Rivers State.
The LGAs are Tai, Abua/Odual, Gokana, Andoni, Ahoada-East, Ahoada-West, Ogba/Egbema/Ndoni and Asari-Toru.
Speaking at the presentation of the relief materials to the representatives of the flood victims in Port Harcourt on Friday, the Rivers State representative in the NDDC board, Chief Tony Okocha, said the gesture was to ameliorate the pains of the victims.
Okocha said: “Also knowing the plight of our people, we are going to be responsive to the people of the Niger Delta.
“Today, I stand on behalf of the Chairman of the board of the NDDC, I stand on behalf of the managing director of the NDDC, who is in-charge of the day-to-day running of the affairs of the commission, to say to you that it is our resolve that Rivers State and Niger Delta will have a new lead as we sit and superintend over your affairs in that ramification.
“We are there to defend and protect and project the Renewed Hope agenda, the mantra on which President Bola Ahmed Tinubu ascended the leadership of this country. President Tinubu has very serious concern about the welfare of Nigerians. Today is one of those demonstrations of the President’s responsiveness to the problems of Nigerians.”
In his opening remarks, director of the NDDC state office, Engr. Theophilus Allagoa, urged the people in the benefiary communities to raise the alarm whenever they noticed that the relief materials were not properly distributed.
Allagoa said: “We are telling the people that wherever you noticed that these items were not properly distributed, raise the alarm. Don’t wait for the media to raise the alarm for you; use your phones to send messages. We are determined to make the difference and we are making the difference.”
Responding on behalf of the flood victims, Chairman of Ahoada-West local government area of the state, Hon. Hope Ikiriko, expressed gratitude to President Tinubu and the NDDC for the gesture.
