Sunderland claimed their first Premier League victory since August as Enzo Le Fee’s first-half penalty secured a 1-0 win over Chelsea at the Stadium of Light on Sunday.
Le Fee calmly converted from 12 yards in the 36th minute, sending Chelsea goalkeeper Mike Penders the wrong direction after referee Jarred Gillett ruled that Levi Colwill had hauled Brian Brobbey to the ground.
The decision was met with frustration from the Chelsea bench, with replays showing both players engaged in a tussle as Brobbey drove toward goal.
The result lifts Sunderland from 20th to 18th in the table, one point from safety, and provides relief for manager Regis le Bris, whose position had come under scrutiny following a 2-0 Europa League defeat to Dinamo Zagreb that prompted boos from home supporters at full-time.
Club sources had indicated earlier in the week that Le Bris would be afforded additional time to reverse the club’s fortunes, having guided Sunderland to a seventh-place finish last season.
Brobbey was central to Sunderland’s attacking play and came close to opening the scoring early when he directed Chemsdine Talbi’s cross just wide of the post.
However, Le Bris faces concerns over the fitness of two key players, with both Granit Xhaka and Brobbey forced off with muscle injuries. Brobbey’s departure in the 77th minute prompted a shift to a more defensive approach, though Chelsea struggled to create meaningful chances thereafter.
