The managing director and chief executive officer of the Niger Delta Power Holding Company (NDPHC), Jennifer Adighije, has reaffirmed the company’s commitment to strengthening Nigeria’s power generation capacity through effective implementation of projects under the National Integrated Power Project (NIPP).

Adighije stated this during an inspection of the Alaoji Power Plant by members of the House of Representatives Committee on Power to assess the ongoing upgrade of the facility.

She said the management of NDPHC would continue to provide the necessary technical, operational, and administrative support to the engineering, procurement, and construction (EPC) contractor to ensure the smooth execution of the project and prevent delays that could affect the delivery timeline.

According to her, the Alaoji Power Plant occupies a strategic position in Nigeria’s electricity generation landscape, noting that its conversion to a combined-cycle facility would significantly improve operational efficiency, optimise gas utilisation and increase electricity generation to the national grid.

She added that the company remained focused on delivering projects that would enhance power reliability, support economic growth and improve electricity supply across the country.

Following the inspection and briefing by NDPHC management, members of the House Committee on Power expressed satisfaction with the information provided and the progress recorded on the project site.

The lawmakers subsequently passed a vote of confidence on the leadership and management of NDPHC, commending the team for its commitment to advancing critical power infrastructure projects.

They also acknowledged the importance of the Alaoji upgrade project in strengthening the country’s electricity generation capacity, but stressed the need for strict project monitoring and improved accountability to ensure timely completion.

The committee directed the EPC contractor handling the project to provide daily updates on project activities to NDPHC management to enhance monitoring, improve coordination among stakeholders and enable prompt resolution of operational challenges during the execution phase.

The lawmakers further reaffirmed the National Assembly’s commitment to initiatives aimed at improving Nigeria’s electricity infrastructure, noting that a reliable power supply remains critical to national development, industrial growth, and improved living standards.

The Alaoji Power Plant is one of the major generation assets under the National Integrated Power Project, a federal government initiative designed to rapidly expand the country’s electricity generation and transmission capacity.

When fully upgraded to combined-cycle operations, the plant is expected to generate additional electricity by maximising the energy potential of the gas turbines installed at the facility.

Industry experts say combined-cycle technology improves fuel efficiency and reduces operational costs, making it one of the most effective ways of increasing electricity output from existing gas-fired power plants.
