The Nenadi Usman-led Labour Party has disowned an alleged fraudulent X account impersonating it, reiterating that the party currently operates no social media account for public communication.

In a statement released on Sunday, Ken Eluma Asogwa, Senior Special Adviser on Media to the Interim National Chairman, said the party’s position remains unchanged from its February 9, 2026 press release.

He stressed that all official information is disseminated strictly through authorised press statements from the Office of the Interim National Chairman.

Asogwa said the leadership’s attention was drawn to an X account operating under the name “LABOUR PARTY (LP) NIG” with the handle @LabourpartyNGR_. He noted that it falsely claims to disseminate official information on behalf of the party and is the same account previously disowned in February.

“Preliminary checks showed the operators deceptively altered both the account name and handle after the party’s earlier disclaimer, in a bid to continue misleading unsuspecting members of the public.

“For the avoidance of doubt, the party listed its only known social media accounts, which are currently inactive: Facebook, Labour Party-Nig, with about 12,000 followers, and X, LabourPartyNG, with approximately 837,000 followers. Both are not in use for public communication at this time,” he said.

The party disclosed that it has formally petitioned the Nigerian Police to facilitate the recovery of its official X account, LabourPartyNG, from the former party leadership currently in control of it, emphasising that the matter is receiving due attention from the Deputy Inspector General of Police, Force Intelligence Department.

Asogwa alleged that the individuals involved, including Barr. Julius Abure and Alhaji Umar Farouk, are cooperating with investigators and providing relevant information concerning their activities, including the unauthorised use of the party’s social media platforms.

“The public will be duly informed upon the conclusion of investigations and the successful recovery of the accounts. In the meantime, the Labour Party advises the general public to disregard any information from @LabourpartyNGR_ and any content currently circulated via LabourPartyNG. This includes a recent post falsely claiming the party is expecting the return of Mr. Peter Obi and Alhaji Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso. Such statements are entirely unauthorised and do not reflect the party’s position.

“The party appreciates the continued vigilance, professionalism, and balanced reportage of the media in covering its activities, adding that any change to its communication structure will be formally announced,” he added.
