A Facebook user, Muhammad Ubale Kiru, has raised the alarm over the activities of suspected vandals stealing fibre optic cables in broad daylight at Janruwa community, a few miles from Zaria on the Kaduna-Zaria Highway in Kaduna State.
Kiru, who shared a video of the incident on his Facebook page, said he came across the suspects while they were digging up the underground cables along the route.
“I saw these young people digging up the fibre optic cables on my way to Zaria. I wanted to make sure I didn’t misunderstand the situation, so I stopped and asked some farmers around the area if the people were legitimate workers. They assured me they are thieves who come to steal the cables for network connectivity,” Ubale narrated in the video.
He added that after confirming his suspicion, he immediately reported the incident to officers of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) stationed at a checkpoint on the expressway about five minutes’ drive from the scene.
“I have done my part by bringing this illegal activity to the public and notice of the authorities,” he said, expressing hope that relevant agencies would take swift action to curb the menace.
Cases of vandalism targeting telecommunication infrastructure often result in poor network connectivity and significant financial losses for telecommunication companies (Telcos).
