Newcastle United ended a run of three defeats in four Premier League games with a 2-0 win at Crystal Palace on Sunday, piling further pressure on home manager Pierre Sage.
After a poor first half ended goalless, Newcastle scored twice in 11 minutes early in the second half. William Osula opened the scoring in the 47th minute, finishing first time from Jacob Murphy’s cross. Harvey Barnes doubled the lead in the 58th minute with a well-taken finish, assisted by Amar Dedić.
Osula’s goal came on his first start since the opening weekend of the season and was his first since May. Barnes has now been involved in 12 Premier League goals since the start of last season.
Palace had been the better side before the break but failed to convert their dominance into a goal. Jean-Philippe Mateta and Daichi Kamada both had attempts, while goalkeeper Lukas Hornicek kept Newcastle’s lead intact with good saves from Adam Wharton and substitute Dario Osorio.
Home supporters booed at full-time as Palace’s difficulties deepened. Sage, who took charge four months ago on a three-year contract, has now overseen five defeats in eight league games. Palace sit 17th with seven points and have conceded 12 goals in their past four matches across league and European competition. The result came a week after a humiliating 5-0 defeat at rivals Brighton.
Palace now face two away London derbies: at Fulham in the Carabao Cup last 16 on Wednesday, and at Tottenham in the league on Saturday.
For Newcastle, the victory eased pressure on manager Matthias Jaissle. He made five changes from the side that lost 1-0 at home to Aston Villa, and Dan Burn, back from injury, delivered a solid performance on his first Premier League start of the season.
The win was Newcastle’s third top-flight victory under Jaissle and their first at Selhurst Park in six years, when Steve Bruce was in charge. It lifted them from 11th to seventh before the late Sunderland-Leeds match.
Newcastle now face Everton twice: away in the Carabao Cup on Thursday, then at home in the Premier League against David Moyes’ side on 2 November.
