NFF Summons Emergency Congress Amid Reports Of Gusau, Sanusi Resignations

The Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) has summoned an emergency meeting of its Congress members amid reports of the resignation of President Ibrahim Musa Gusau and General Secretary Mohammed Sanusi.

The emergency Congress meeting, according to an invitation letter sighted by our correspondent, is scheduled for 12 noon in Abuja, September 26, with all members of the NFF Congress directed to attend.

The invitation, signed by Yakubu Sarma on behalf of the Congress Members, comes against the backdrop of mounting pressure on the leadership of the football governing body and growing uncertainty over the future of the NFF Executive Committee and Secretariat.

The letter, addressed to all NFF Congress members, including State Football Association chairmen, club representatives, the Referees Association, Coaches Association, Players Union and the Nigeria Referees Association (NRA), listed five items on the proposed agenda.

They include “current developments within the Nigeria Football Federation”, “status and functioning of the NFF Executive Committee and Secretariat” and the implications for the governance, stability and independence of the federation.

Congress members are also expected to consider appropriate measures under the statutes of the NFF, the Confederation of African Football (CAF) and FIFA, before determining the way forward.

The invitation stated that attendance was mandatory, with members asked to confirm their participation. Travel and accommodation arrangements, it added, would be communicated separately.

The emergency meeting is coming at a particularly critical moment for Nigerian football, following reports that Gusau and Sanusi have resigned their respective positions amid intense pressure on the federation’s leadership.

The reported developments have thrown the NFF into fresh uncertainty barely weeks before the federation’s scheduled elective Congress, raising questions about the status of the current Executive Committee and the process for managing the leadership transition.

The emergency Congress is therefore expected to provide a clearer picture of the situation and determine the next steps for the administration of Nigerian football.
