NFF’s Structural Failures Responsible for Nigeria’s World Cup Absence – Sodje

Former Super Eagles defender Efe Sodje has attributed Nigeria’s failure to qualify for the 2026 FIFA World Cup to poor administration and structural shortcomings within the country’s football system.

Sodje expressed disappointment over the Super Eagles’ inability to secure a place at football’s biggest tournament despite possessing what many consider one of the strongest squads on the African continent.

Nigeria’s hopes of reaching the World Cup ended after a dramatic qualification campaign that culminated in a penalty shoot-out defeat to the Democratic Republic of the Congo, who eventually secured the coveted ticket to the global showpiece.

Reflecting on the disappointment, Sodje insisted that responsibility should not be placed solely on the players and coaching staff.

“Very disappointing. With the quality of players we have, we should be there,” Sodje told Brila Media.

“But it’s not just the players. We also have to look at the people upstairs because decisions and structure play a big role in why we didn’t qualify.”

The former defender argued that sustained success in international football requires strong leadership, effective planning and a well-organised football administration capable of providing the right environment for players and coaches to thrive.

His comments echo growing concerns among football stakeholders regarding long-term planning, grassroots development, coaching continuity and administrative efficiency within Nigerian football.

Many observers believe Nigeria possesses enough talent to compete with the world’s best teams, but recurring organisational challenges have often undermined the country’s ambitions on the international stage.

The Super Eagles’ absence from the 2026 World Cup represents a significant setback for a nation with a rich football history and a reputation as one of Africa’s traditional powerhouses.

Attention will now shift towards the qualification campaign for the next edition of the Africa Cup of Nations, where Nigeria will seek to rebuild momentum and restore confidence among supporters.

With calls for reforms growing louder, the coming months could prove crucial in determining the future direction of Nigerian football and whether lessons from the failed World Cup qualification campaign will lead to meaningful changes within the system.
