Former Minister of Labour and Employment, Dr Chris Ngige is currently in the custody of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), his media aide, Fred Chukwuelobe, has stated.

Chukwuelobe dismissed reports that the former Anambra State governor may have been kidnapped as being rumoured.

The media aide said he received numerous calls from friends and journalists seeking confirmation after reports late Monday claimed that Ngige had been abducted.

“I have been receiving calls in the past hour from friends and journalists seeking the veracity of the news making the rounds that His Excellency, Dr. Chris Ngige, former governor of Anambra State and immediate past minister of labour and employment, ‘has been kidnapped,’” he wrote on Facebook.

“Ngige is with the EFCC. He was not ‘abducted’ or ‘kidnapped.’”

The media aide added that further details would be provided in due course.

EFCC spokesperson, Dele Oyewale, did not respond to calls or messages seeking confirmation.

The statement came days after an attack on Ngige’s convoy on November 27 along the Nkpor–Nnobi road in Idemili North Local Government Area of Anambra State, where gunmen disguised in police and army uniforms opened fire, killing a woman recording the incident and injuring a police officer and other civilians.

Ngige, however, was not in the convoy at the time of the assault.
