The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) Bauchi Office said it has received 7,466 alleged rights violation complaints between January to August this year in the state.

The coordinator NHRC Bauchi State, Yachit Susan Dala disclosed this while speaking to journalists in Bauchi.

Dala said the cases are related to either prolonged detention or illegal arrest and other violations of human rights.

She said out of the 7,644 cases received, only 15 cases are connected to illegal detention and other civil and political right violation.

“For instance, in 2019 we recorded about 78 cases when we came and majority of this cases were civil and political right base, but this year, between January and August we have recorded about 7,466 cases and out of these 7,466 cases, only about 15 bothered about issues such as prolong detention,” Dala said.

She added that the commission follows up with cases received by investigating to ensure that they are factual before engaging relevant stakeholders.

The coordinator further added that some of the complaints received pertain to human rights violations and are against some law enforcement agencies, adding that the commission ensures fair hearing and also ensure that the violations are addressed.

“Right to fair hearing is also a fundamental human right. When there is compliant against you, we try to get the other side of the story to enable us take further actions.

“I think the police and law enforcement agencies are using the Administration of Criminal Justice Act (ACJA) which has contributed to reduction of complaints received by the commission,” she said.
