Rapper Nicki Minaj has praised US President Donald Trump for changing the country’s political atmosphere after appearing alongside him at a Republican campaign rally in Michigan.

Minaj, who has previously described herself as Trump’s “number one fan”, told supporters he had given Americans “a future to look forward to” as Republicans sought to strengthen their position ahead of the 3 November midterm elections.

The rapper took to the stage in Port Huron on Sunday, wearing a gold-coloured Gucci-branded suit, and led the crowd in chants supporting Trump and Republican candidates in Michigan.

“We really need all these great people to be elected, because this is a major turning point for our country,” she said.

Trump invited Minaj to speak during the rally after making comments about her appearance. As she left the stage, he praised her, saying she had never looked more beautiful and describing her as smart.

The appearance comes as Republicans and Democrats intensify campaigning in closely contested races that will determine control of Congress for the remainder of Trump’s presidency.

In Michigan, Democratic Senate hopeful Abdul El-Sayed is facing Republican Mike Rogers in a competitive contest. Former President Barack Obama campaigned with El-Sayed on Saturday.

Trump also targeted El-Sayed’s Muslim faith during his rally, alleging that a victory for the Democratic candidate would lead to jihadists being invited into the United States.

El-Sayed has condemned similar comments as Islamophobic, accusing Trump of using his name and religion to divert attention from the economic pressures facing Americans, including the cost of fuel, groceries and healthcare.

Minaj has previously criticised some of Trump’s policies during his first term, despite her public expressions of support for the president.
